Covert a Regular router into a PoE outer o WAP

There ate two ways to do this, one of them requires opening up the router and cutting traces which voids your warranty and also cause other errors if its not done carefuly so we are doing the other method. in this tutorial we are going to tell the basics your can read detailed tutorial about it here

Step 1: Convert the router into a WAP

This is a simpler approach that leverages your existing router's Wi-Fi capabilities. Here's a general guide. you wont be able to do this to your ISP provided router., you need to buy a second router to do this(most times the router belongs to the ISP).  In case you want to use the router as a router you don't have to do the above steps, move to Step 2

  • Some routers support WAP mode so if you are planning to buy a new router try buying one with WAP mode. most routers can be assigned to WAP even if the product doesn't say it.
  • Check Compatibility and Update Firmware:  Make sure your router can operate in Access Point (AP) mode. Consult the user manual or manufacturer's website for details. Update the router's firmware to the latest version for smooth operation.
  • Configure Router as AP:  Access the router's admin interface (usually at 192.168.1.1 or check the manual). Locate the Wireless or Bridge Mode settings and enable AP mode.
  • Disable DHCP and Set Static IP:  Your main router handles DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) duties. In the AP settings, disable DHCP to avoid IP conflicts. Assign a static IP address for the router within the same subnet as your main router but outside its DHCP scope.
  • Configure Wi-Fi Settings:  Set the SSID (Wi-Fi name), password, and security type (WPA2 recommended) for your new AP.
  • Connect and Verify:  Connect the AP to your main router using an ethernet cable (LAN to LAN port). After configuration, your devices should detect the new Wi-Fi network created by the AP.

Step 2: Use a PoE Injector with your Regular Router

  • Follow this tutorial on how to build DIY PoE injector.
  • You can build a DIY PoE injector by using two extra wires in the RJ45 to sent power
  • But if you are using this method your maximum speed will be limited to 100 mb/s
  • But in the tutorial the second side was a PoE device, but our device is not
  • So you need to cut the power wires from the router side and connect the routers power cord to it.

Important Safety Note:  While modifying a router for PoE is not recommended, there are online resources that describe the process. However, proceed with extreme caution and at your own risk, as it involves electrical modifications and can be dangerous.
